Position: Driller
Work Location: Oman
Work Schedule: 35 Days ON/OFF
Job Summary
The Rig Driller is in charge of the Well Pulling Hoist and crew and is responsible for ongoing operations during his tour.
Experience and Training
A Driller will have worked up through the ranks of the rig crew, and will have become acquainted with the equipment and workover procedures during this time. Such experience is necessary for the Driller to assume the training responsibilities with regard to safe work practice for new and existing crew members. The Driller will have worked at the field level in the Well Pulling Hoist operations for a minimum of 5 years. Within QCompany, Rig Driller are required to attend, and where applicable pass, certain training courses, which will include, but may not be limited to, the following:
HSE Induction
Safety Awareness - at three yearly intervals after completion of HSE induction·
Hydrogen Sulphide - with yearly refresher·
Gas Tester - with three yearly refresher·
Permit to Work Systems·
Supervising Safety - with three yearly refresher·
Base Fire Fighting·
Electrical Isolation of Beam Pumps
Job Role
Stress the safety program to the rig crew and make sure that it is followed. By setting a good example, and ensuring compliance with company safe work practices, the Driller will be able to develop safe work habits within his rig crew.
In liaison with the Toolpusher, perform a gas test and isolate well site/well head equipments prior to moving the rig on location. Operate Rig controls when rigging up and rigging down the WPH and auxiliary equipment.
At the beginning of each shift, ensure that all equipment is checked (example: oil levels, water levels) Operate the Hoist. The duty station is the driller’s panel which includes brakes, throttles, clutches, and various gauges. The operator is able to raise and lower the rod and tubular strings in a controlled manner, and by monitoring the various gauges closely, make adjustments as conditions require.
Run or assist in running various special tools for workover and well repair procedures. In many cases specialist and / or service company personnel are available to help the operator do this.
Train and demonstrate tot he crew company procedures and the proper care and maintenance of the hoist and auxiliary equipment.
Continually assess the abilities of his crew members, and nominate to his supervisor personnel fit for further training and eventual promotion.
Advise the Toolpusher of any abnormal operating conditions, and suspend operations if these abnormal operating conditions could possibly contribute to or create an unsafe situation.
Prepare all downhole equipments prior to running same in hole. (example: tallying and calipering tubulars, cleaning and checking threads). Ensure that WPH equipments, wellsite equipments, and well site areas are kept clean and serviceable at all times.
Organize rig equipment and down hole tools as required to ensure no time wastage when proceeding to the next phase of the well repair/ workover program.
Communicate clearly to crew members, and make sure all tasks are well understood by employees before attempting any task.
HSE Responsibilities - All Supervisors
The inclusion of HSE considerations when issuing day to day job instructions.
Promptly responding to all reports of unsafe conditions, unsafe activities, accidents and near misses, which are received from subordinates and other persons.
Taking prompt corrective action and advising management accordingly with regard to unsafe and unhealthy procedures, methods, facilities, equipment and substances.
Encouraging personal HSE awareness among individual subordinates, the collective workforce and any personnel subcontracted to Company.
Adequately and promptly investigating and reporting all accidents and near misses.
Ensuring that all work for which you have a supervisory responsibility, whether executed by Company employees or subcontractors, is carried out with full regard tothe applicable HSE procedures.
Personally confirming that all persons, whether Company or subcontractor employees,who are engaged in activities, on facilities for which you have a supervisory respon-sibility, are competent to safely execute the required work, and that the applicable Operating and HSE Procedures are communicated, understood and in place.
Advising your workforce and any other persons at risk, of any potential HSE hazards arising from the work activities which fall within your supervisory scope.
Ensuring that your subordinates and any Company subcontractors make correct use of personal protective clothing and equipment and that the equipment so used is suitably rated with consideration to the hazards involved.
Ensuring that safety and emergency equipment, whether portable or installed, is maintained in a safe operable condition, and that such equipment is correctly used.Checking that all facilities, tools and equipment, in use within your area of super-visory responsibility are in a safe operable condition.
Ensuring that any tools, equipment and vehicles, brought into your area of the Company operation by subcontractors, and intended for use on behalf of Company are in a safe operable condition.
Holding regular HSE meetings with your workforce and, where applicable, other persons, such as contractors, subcontractors and vendors representatives.
Conducting regular inspections and audits of the facilities under your control in order to identify and eliminate hazards to health, safety and the environment.
Participation in the follow-up and close-out of inspection and audit findings.
